UK-Halsey Sailmakers – Warsash Spring Series Update
UK-Halsey Sailmakers have started the Warsash Spring Series with a bang. In the 45 Foot class, Eammon O’Nolans’ Farr 45 ‘Freddie Freeloader’ convincingly beat the opposition. Posting three firsts and a second with the lofts’ Rob Larke on the Mainsheet and Sam Richmond trimming downwind, it is a great start to the Big Boat Series for 2008. Unfortunately they could not extend their lead as Sunday was more suitable for snowball fights than the excellent windward-leeward racing they had on Saturday.
In the IRC 2 Class David Walters and his crew on ‘Jackdaw’ posted impressive results in their two races to take the win, a massive seven points clear of the second placed boat. With a new UK-Halsey wardrobe towards the end of last season Walters is certainly flying.
In the Sigma 38 class, UK-Halsey Sails are used by two of the top three contenders. John Rainger and Robert Denning on ‘Light’ proved to be the most consistent with two seconds, with Nigel Goodhew and his crew on board ‘Persephone’ pushing them all the way to finish just 3 points behind.

The Hamble based Farr 45 ‘Freddie Freeloader’ is to use UK Halsey Sails (Cowes) for UK Grand Prix circuit in 2008.
The sails are UK Halsey Carbon MatriX.
Our relationship with co-owners Eammon O’Nolan and Michelle Brachet has been built up over the last two years. Under the brand of Unlimited Sailing the couple have been hugely successful in Melges World and European Championships and in the UKs larger regattas, Cork Week, Cowes Week and Round The Island Race chartering Farr 45s and a Rogers 46.
All this experience gained by a committed, young crew featuring some of the best sailors Skandia Team GBR has to offer coupled with that of UK Halsey Sailmakers will ensure the 2008 season is a great success.
The Farr 45 class in the UK has experienced a great resurgence over the past couple of years, this year there will be up to 9 boats competing in 2008 often on a level-rating basis, resulting in incredibly tough racing.
2008 has the potential to be the closest racing yet and ‘Freddie Freeloader’ has chosen UK Halsey Carbon Matrix sails to enable them to compete at the top level. With a packed programme starting with the Red Funnel in March, the Hamble Big Boat Series, Vice-Admirals Cup, Cork Week, Cowes Week and Dartmouth ‘Freddie Freeloader’ is hoping to feature at the top of the score sheets from the outset.
MatriX is the culmination of years of development within the UK Halsey Group. The result is a string sail, customised to each individual and designed for its intended use to give each customer the performance edge desired.

UK Halsey Sailmakers (Cowes) to build complete Inventory for 30m Superyacht
Formula Spars have contracted UK Halsey Sailmakers (Cowes) to design and build a complete inventory for a 30 metre steel Sloop weighing in at 160 tons for a European client. The inventory is a Mainsail, a Genoa, a Staysail, and a Spinnaker.
The design work is being carried out by our special projects manager Tom McWilliam in consultation with the rig specialists at Formula Spars.
The UK Halsey sails for this project are made from Dimension Polyant GXLD Carbon Spectra. The upwind sail area is just shy of a whopping 500m2, which is entirely eclipsed by the spinnaker area of 650m2.

UK Halsey Sailmakers (Cowes) enjoys great welcome at Sigma 38 Class Dinner
Saturday 26th January saw the annual Sigma 38 get together at the Solent Hotel in Whitely. UK Halsey Sailmakers (Cowes) have enjoyed a close relationship with many members of the class and it was great for our representative, Sam Richmond, to meet so many friendly faces.
The room was decorated with ‘battle-flags’ provided by UK Halsey Sailmakers (Cowes) for the class and you will be seeing them up many forestays near you soon!
“On behalf of the Sigma 38 Class Association can I thank UK Halsey Sails very much for our class flags. I'm sure you will agree that along with Eddie Mays' photos they really helped give the room a Sigma 38 personality.”
The class has a great feel about it and it doesn’t show any signs of diminishing under the new chairman Nigel Goodhew of ‘Persephone’ following on from the sterling job done by Rob Denning of ‘Light’.
UK Halsey Sailmakers has had great success within the class over the past few years using our Kevlar Tape Drive technology.

Changes to IRC Rules For 2008
Most of the changes to IRC Rules for 2008 are related to detail ‘administrative’ issues which at a day to day level will have little or no immediate effect. There are however some more substantive changes as outlined below.
1. The addition of ‘appendages’ follows the loss of a boat during 2007 and has no practical effect.
2. Rules 9.6 and 19.6 related to certificate validity are now explicitly linked.
3. Rule 17.7 now gives precedence to IRC Rules over one design class rules and is explicitly linked to Rule 27.4.2 which has been edited to clarify that it addresses crew limitations only.
4. Rules 19.1 and 19.2 are modified to clarify the process for rating reviews.
5. New Rule 20.4 permits a protest committee to decide whether or not a boat whose certificate has been invalidated under Rule 19.6 should be penalised.
6. The minimum values of MUW, MTW and MHW used in the calculation of mainsail area given by Rule 26.5.4 are reduced to produce greater equity for boats with smaller roach mainsails.
7. In response to developments in headsail design, Headsail three-quarter width (HTW) is introduced and Rule 26.7 amended to incorporate HTW into the calculation of headsail area.
8. Rule 27.3.4 is deleted as redundant being effectively repeated by Rule 14.1.
9. The amendment to IRC Rule 28.2 formalises current practice. ‘RORC STIX’ and ‘RORC Design Category’ will in future be referred to as ‘IRC STIX’ and ‘IRC Design Category’.
10. IRC 2007 Notice 1 is incorporated into IRC Rules by the introduction of a definition of Battens and amendment of the definition of spinnakers.
11. The definition of y is amended, without substantive effect, to correct historic errors

UK Cowes power Purple Haze to Victory
After going through a three-year refit, the brightly finished Quarter Tonner, PURPLE HAZE won the 14-boat Quarter Ton Cup last June and two days later went out and won the 555-boat IRC division in the Around the Isle of Wight race. Neither was an easy feat.
Built in 1978 PURPLE HAZE was designed by the renowned David Thomas. Tony Dodd has owned the boat for three years, during which time he has carried out an extensive refit, including new veneers over the entire hull. A varnished boat, she is an amazing credit to their efforts and looked absolutely stunning on the water. Making her refit complete was full set of Tape-Drive sails.
The Quarter Ton Cup was revived after a nearly long hiatus brought on by the death of the IOR Rule. Designer Ron Holland presented the prizes for the regatta and spoke about the vital role that the Quarter Ton Class had played in the education of so many of today's great yacht designers. He closed with the comment, “I couldn't have done MIRABELLA (the largest sloop in the world) without the Quarter Ton Cup!”
The Quarter Ton Cup went right down to wire with PURPLE HAZE tied with SUPER Q at 11 points after six races over two days, which produced white-knuckle conditions. The final three races were sailed in a more sedate 6-12 knots.
"Thrashing 23-foot boats around in approaching 30 knots of breeze was terrific. We laid them on their sides, tipped them over and had great fun. It was a brilliant day's sailing and you realize just how good Grand Prix rules are when the boats are so different in shape but finish only seconds apart after such tough racing," said Peter Morton, skipper SUPER Q.
PURPLE HAZE revelled in the lighter airs and went on to win from Chris & Sue Flewitt's OLIVIA ANNE VI and Roger & Liz Swinney's AYANAMI, while SUPER Q finished 10th. A little bit of rig tweaking between races put SUPER Q back on track and she prevailed in a humdinger of a dog fight. A last race thriller did not materialize because PURPLE HAZE got a cracking start and sailed a textbook race to win both the race and the 2005 Quarter Ton Cup.
For Tony Dodd, winning the Gold Roman Bowl, the most prestigious trophy award amongst the 1692-boat in the Round the Island Race, was the absolute icing on the cake: “We were delighted to win the newly resurrected Quarter Ton Cup earlier in the week. We never imagined we'd do so well in the JPMorgan Asset Management Round the Island Race too.”

1720’s
UK McWilliam sails have been involved with the 1720 class since it first started back in the early nineties and since the beginning have always been at the front end of the fleet, winning the European Championships more than most.
In 2005 our sails filled four of the top six places at the Europeans in Lake Garda and in addition the other two boats in the top six were using UK asymmetric spinnakers to maximise their down wind speed. Once again UK has proven that that they are building the fastest 1720 sails to date.
Rob Larke has now joined UK McWilliam and will be looking after the 1720 fleet during the 2006 season. Rob is no stranger to the 1720, having won Cork Week when he first stepped into the class then narrowly missing out on the European title when he teamed up with Mark Mansfield back in 2002. He will be on hand to help you with your 1720 or if would like a quote then please don’t hesitate to contact him.
